I'm back! I left for camp at Otter Lake Friday night, and had intended to leave a message beforehand explaining my absence, but was cooking up until the last minute on Friday, trying to make sure I would have enough food to last me the weekend. I left for camp knowing that a challenging weekend was ahead of me: a wedding on Saturday and a delicious buffet dinner on Sunday; I had to bring enough food to keep me satisfied and avoid temptation. Here's a recap:
On Friday I started out by sauteing some onions and green peppers and adding eggs to make a frittata.
Then it was time to get down to business. I needed to bake more bread and wanted to follow the recipe very carefully to make sure it rose enough this time. And rise it did.
A friend of mine in Syracuse has a peach tree growing in his driveway and when I asked for a few peaches I got a bagful, so I made peach salsa and peach cornmeal upside down cake. I finished up by baking some cornbread, and snacked on my fresh baked bread as I worked.
Saturday morning started off with a 6.7 mile run - two laps around Otter Lake. When I finished I knew I would need a big breakfast because there would be a plethora of delicious but non-local food to resist in the coming hours. I made myself some eggs and pancakes, but looking at the big empty spot on my plate realized something was missing - toast.
One thing I hadn't considered was water. The camp I was visiting is on an island and the tap isn't run often enough to drink from. My hosts supplied bottled spring water and luckily it was Nirvana brand, bottled right in Forestport, NY. I usually try to avoid bottled water, but since I hadn't planned ahead and brought tap water from home, I was glad to find this oasis.
The wedding of Andrew Cole and Maureen Rooney was a beautiful affair. There were hors d'oeuvres served outside the church after the ceremony, but I was still full from breakfast, and although I love vegetables and dip and bruschetta I snacked not.
We had a few hours between the wedding and reception. I love wedding receptions. Good food, open bar, people-watching; I knew I had to go into this with a full belly. I had some bread with vegetable marinara left over from my pizza, then decided to have a couple more slices with a garlic and herb cheese spread from Palatine Cheese and some blackberries.
Below is a sampling of food that was served at the reception:
Caprese Salad (stacked cucumber, basil, tomato and mozzarella in a balsamic dressing), corn on the cob, salt potatoes, pasta salad, kabobs (steak, chicken, and veggie), along with salad and rolls. I ate what I could:
Corn on the cob and tomatoes. I also took a chance on a couple pieces of green pepper and cucumber. I didn't want to be the obnoxious party-goer who hunts down the caterer and asks what's in the food, and have never wanted my mission to be anyone else's problem. So I ate the things that were most likely to be local and avoided those that I knew definitely were not.
One exception: the bride and groom are not fans of champagne; for the toast they chose an Ommegang brew called Rare Vos. I decided it would be disrespectful to the newlyweds if I did not join in the toast, and this was the one time it was okay to break the rule, kind of like how younger kids are sometimes allowed to drink the champagne toast at a wedding even though they are not of age.
The final temptation of the night:
Sorry for the fuzzy picture, we were on our way out and it was getting dark, but trust me - they looked delicious.
Onto Sunday. Today I had to do my mile-long swim around the island again, but first I had to find out if it really was a mile. I kayaked around the island with my GPS and found out that I only swam 3/4 of a mile last weekend. I mapped out some additions and started swimming. By the time I finished I was famished, and since I didn't want to bother bringing back any eggs back home I had four eggs, two pancakes, and two pieces of toast with cheese spread.
Later that day my family was invited up to join my boyfriend's family at their camp for a huge shindig. Luckily I was so busy helping to chase my nieces and nephews that I didn't have much time to be enticed by the food everyone brought, but here are a few pictures of the spread:
Here's what I ate:
A word about the watermelon, it was prepared in a boiled-down mixture of tequila and Grand Marnier. Although liquor isn't local, at least not among the crowds I run in, this wasn't your I'm-in-college-and-I-soaked-fruit-in-vodka type of dish. It was more of a flavoring, so I ate it.
And of course my peach and cornmeal upside down cake. Actually it's Martha's peach and cornmeal upside down cake, but I localized it.
